Full Job Description

Support Information Technology (IT) infrastructure within Network Rail. Assist projects with their choice and deployment of new infrastructure, considering cost, capacity, security, and Network Rail IT strategy. Analyse and report on IT infrastructure on-premises and in the cloud.

What will you be doing?

  • Analyse project requirements for IT infrastructure and propose suitable solutions so that projects can be delivered in a secure, timely and cost-effective way.

  • Monitor the performance, security and supportability of hardware and infrastructure systems and execute upgrades so that Datacentre and Lan room infrastructure is kept in a working and supported state.

  • Analyse the suitability of infrastructure to be virtualised or migrated to the cloud so that applications are hosted on the most appropriate platform for supportability, security, performance, and cost.

  • Define, author, and maintain operational patterns, standards, and best practices for the supported technology domain so that IT projects and support teams can understand how best to deliver in a manner which is safe and sustainable for the long term.

  • Identify, communicate, and address current/future risks, opportunities and challenges for Network Rail arising from developments or changes within the technology domain so that applications continue to be available for users underpinning operation of the railway.

  • Maintain IT backup and recovery systems so that applications can be recovered in the event of failure.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders such as project and operational teams so that queries can be discussed and resolved promptly to influence technology decisions that follow strategy and policy.

  • Oversee the auditing of the hardware from renewals warranty to supporting suppliers so that Network Rail can keep consistent records of IT inventory.

  • Analyse and review performance of file storage. Propose and implement changes to the compute capacity on file servers so that users can continue to access their files to Service Level Agreements.

  • Develop processes, procedures & system configuration documentation for the support and maintenance of Network Rail core infrastructure services in order to allow systems to be supported in a known and consistent manner.

    Essential

  • Significant experience within in a support and/or project delivery role.

  • Experience of working within an ITIL based support environment.

  • Excellent analytical, organisational and teamwork skills, with a proven record of ownership of delivery of solutions in a complex technical environment.

  • Experience of driving continuous improvements in a multi-skilled team in a customer focussed environment.

  • Broad technical knowledge IT (for example networking, storage, virtualisation, public cloud, operating systems, backup and recovery) and significant experience in two or more of these technologies

  • Proven capability to manage stakeholder relationships and communicate complex technical issues in a customer-focused way.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Good analytical skills

  • Knowledge of the railway industry and its regulatory framework

  • Recognised industry contributor to the development of the supported technology domain best practice.

  • Knowledge of Physical hardware - Dell

  • Knowledge of virtualisation platforms - VMware/Hyper-V/Azure

  • Knowledge of Windows and Linux Operating systems (Microsoft/RedHat)

  • Knowledge of core infrastructure services (Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, DFS)
