Full Job Description

We are looking to recruit Senior Veterinary Inspectors that will be providing veterinary operational services to safeguard animal health and welfare and public health, protect the economy and enhance food security.

This will be done by inspection, surveillance, regulation, enforcement, and where applicable research, through the application of state veterinary medicine principles in the delivery of GB Governments' policies. Responding to incidents and outbreaks of notifiable diseases in animals you will undertake on-farm and field investigations and support differential diagnosis of diseases through examination and inspection.

Main responsibilities will involve investigating notifiable animal diseases in farm livestock by undertaking on-farm and field investigations by

  • Examining and inspecting farmed animals, to support differential diagnosis of notifiable diseases.

  • Management of TB breakdown cases.

  • Conducting in field post mortem examinations when appropriate.

  • Conduct inspections at premises handling Animal-By-Products to support the control of risk to animal and public health.

  • Collecting and submitting appropriate samples for laboratory testing.

  • Collecting and interpreting relevant data.

  • Reporting findings and recommendations.


  • The majority of days will include travel and working in a geographical area (travel averaging 50-60 miles per day), with other days based solely in the office completing reports and supporting with telephone enquiries.

    The role will involve working a 5-day week - Monday to Friday along with participation in ab out of hours rota - including nights/weekends/bank holidays to ensure provision of a 24 hour, 7 day a week capability to provide telephone advice and immediate response to incidents and emergencies as required by the business.

  • A Veterinary Medicine degree.

  • MRCVS registered

  • An excellent communicator and capable of producing clear, concise and knowledgeable reports.

  • You should also have a good understanding of welfare issues, notifiable exotic diseases in UK-based animals and the control of endemic diseases such as TB

  • As the work will involve travelling UK valid driving licence along with the use of a vehicle is essential

  • June 2024 start
